Repairability index
A score displayed at the point of sale rating how easily a product can be repaired, introduced in France and now being folded into a broader durability score.
The French repairability index scores products out of ten on criteria including documentation availability, ease of disassembly, spare-parts availability and price, and remote support. Categories covered include smartphones, laptops and washing machines, and the score must be displayed where the product is sold.
Since 2025 a durability index has been rolling out on new categories. It keeps reparability but adds robustness and reliability into a single score, and is intended to supersede the repairability index over time.
The index started as a consumer-information measure and has become a purchasing criterion: since 1 January 2026, French state services and local authorities must take the durability index into account when buying digital products. A score is now something that decides tenders, not just something printed on a label.
