Repair yield
The share of devices entering a workshop that leave it working and saleable, instead of being scrapped or harvested for parts.
Repair yield is the headline productivity measure of a repair operation. Expressed as a percentage of intake, it captures in one number the combined effect of technician skill, spare-parts availability, diagnostic accuracy and the quality of the incoming flow.
It is easy to compare badly. Yield depends heavily on what comes in: a flow of three-year-old corporate laptops yields far better than a mixed consumer flow of unknown age, so a yield figure without its intake profile means little. It also depends on where the boundary is drawn: some operators count parts harvesting as a success, others count only devices resold whole.
Yield is the variable that decides whether repair pays. Each percentage point moves devices from material value to resale value, a difference measured in multiples rather than percentages. Improving it is mostly unglamorous work: better diagnostics at intake, better parts supply, tighter procedures, and feeding failure data back into training.
